2.5 Years at Shalom Springdale

It’s been about two and a half years since I became part of Shalom Springdale, and somewhere along the way, this place has become much more than just where I live.

I’ve met new families, made new friends, shared countless conversations, and become part of a community that is genuinely wonderful to be around. One of the things I love most about Springdale is its greenery — the trees, the open spaces, and the feeling that, despite being in a growing city, we still have a little green world of our own.

Over these years, I’ve been fortunate to be part of several community initiatives and to serve as part of the Association for a couple of years. Wherever I felt I could contribute, I’ve tried to pitch in. Sometimes it was something significant, sometimes it was simply helping out where needed. I believe that’s how a community grows — everyone contributing a little of their time, energy and ideas.

And then there are the everyday moments that probably matter even more.

The daily chit-chats with Solomon Uncle are one of those little routines I’ve come to enjoy. We talk about life, people, the things that don’t quite go as planned, and the imperfections we all navigate through in our daily lives. Nothing too formal — just those simple conversations that somehow make the day a little better.

As the evening sets in, you can often spot Rajan — Prabhu’s father — sitting on the community bench, enjoying the sunset. That bench itself has a small story. It was recently sponsored by residents for everyone to enjoy. A big thank you to all those generous residents — and yes, **I’m happy to say I was one of them!😊

Then there are the evenings with the community kids.

Playing cricket and football with Jasad, Mugilu, Srafarsa and Moitha takes me straight back to my own childhood. Running around, arguing over whether something was out or not, chasing the ball, and just enjoying the evening without worrying about anything else — it’s amazing how a simple game can bring back memories you thought you had forgotten.

And if I’ve got the names or spellings wrong, please excuse me! 😄 I’m still learning — but the memories are definitely right.

Of course, there are many more people and many more stories. I know quite a few families here, but there are a few friendships that have their own special place.

And then there is the evening chai with Sandeep and Dominic — a little tea, a lot of conversation, some serious discussions, and, naturally, a fair amount of gossip. The kind of gossip that, according to our very strict and completely unofficial agreement, "stays with us!" 😄☕

Looking back at these two and a half years, I realise that it’s not really the houses, roads or buildings that make a community.

It’s the small conversations, shared laughter, evening games, helping hands, cups of chai, sunset moments, and the people you unexpectedly become friends with.

That’s what makes Shalom Springdale special.

And that’s what makes it feel like home.
